What is Roulette?
Roulette is a classic casino game in which you bet on where a ball will land on a spinning wheel. Like many casino games, it found huge popularity in French high society before spreading across the world.
It has a similar image to baccarat, with high-stakes VIP tables and glamorous patrons. However, it’s actually one of the most accessible games thanks to the simple rules and hands-off participation.
The Objective
The goal of roulette is devastatingly simple: correctly guess the winning outcome. A roulette wheel has colored and numbered pockets, and you just have to guess which one a small ball will land in.
You can bet on what color the pocket is, whether the number is odd, high or low or even try to guess the exact number. The payout will then depend on how unlikely your guess was.

How to Play Roulette: The Essentials
The roulette table is simple. You have the wheel, a croupier to manage it, and a betting layout. You place chips on the layout to indicate which outcome you’re betting on.
Understanding the Roulette Wheel
There are a few different types of roulette wheels, but all of them will have numbered pockets from 1-36 in black and red, plus a number of green 0 pockets. The more green pockets on a roulette wheel, the higher the house edge.
Placing Your Bets: Inside vs. Outside
The types of bets in roulette are grouped according to where they are on the betting layout.
Inside Bets: These are bets made on specific numbers or a small group of them. The centre of the roulette betting layout is a grid of the 36 numbered pockets (plus however many 0s). You put chips on the numbers or the lines between them to make a bet.
Outside Bets: These cover either a half or a third of all the pockets in a single bet. Surrounding the centre grid are additional betting squares, which is why these are called outside bets. These include black or red, odd or even, high and low, and then sets of 12 numbers.
The Spin and the Payout
Once all bets have been made, the croupier drops the ball into the roulette wheel, and all players wait to see where it lands.
If it lands in a pocket that matches the bet you made, you win. The payout is dependent on which bet you placed. So a bet on a single number pays much higher than a bet on black.
Bet | Payout | Probability |
---|---|---|
Red/Black | 1:1 | 48.6% |
Odd/Even | 1:1 | 48.6% |
1 to 18/19 to 36 | 1:1 | 48.6% |
Dozens | 2:1 | 32.4% |
Columns | 2:1 | 32.4% |
Six line (6 numbers) | 5:1 | 16.2% |
First five (5 numbers) | 6:1 | 13.5% |
Corner (4 numbers) | 8:1 | 10.8% |
Street (3 numbers) | 11:1 | 8.1% |
Split (2 number) | 17:1 | 5.4% |
Any one number | 35:1 | 2.7% |
(These odds are based on single-zero/European roulette. Payouts are unchanged between variations.)
Bets are then paid out, and a new round starts.
Roulette Variations: Which Game to Play?
There are three main variations of roulette. When you can choose between any of them, there is a clear correct choice.
The main difference between different roulette variations is how many green pockets are on the wheel. Since the green 0 pockets don’t pay out on outside bets, this raises the house edge significantly.
Variation | Green Pockets | House Edge |
---|---|---|
European | One, 0 | 2.70% |
American (Double-Zero) | Two, 0 & 00 | 5.26% |
Triple-Zero | Three 0, 00 & 000 | 7.69% |
While Triple-Zero tables will have a much lower minimum bet than the other two games, it’s still never worth playing due to the awful house edge. We recommend sticking to European roulette whenever it’s available.
Roulette Strategy: A Game of Chance
Roulette is a game of chance, so you can’t influence the outcome. However, thanks to its consistent odds, it’s become a popular game for using betting systems.
Popular Betting Systems
Most of the popular betting systems you find were developed to be used on roulette. They’re not foolproof and can’t guarantee you a profit, but they do help you manage your bankroll and make smart, informed bets.
Popular roulette betting systems include:
- Martingale
- Labouchere
- Fibonacci
- Paroli
- Reverse Martingale
Play Roulette Responsibly
Of course, with any casino game, it’s important to maintain healthy gambling habits. Using casino tools and understanding your limits will help keep your roulette games safe and enjoyable.
Set Your Limits
Always establish a budget for your play session and do everything in your power to stick to it. You can establish deposit or bet limits at online casinos to help manage this by force.
Enjoy the Thrill, Not the Chase
Roulette is fun and more consistent than other games, but it’s not a way to make a profit. Never go into the game expecting to win, and don’t chase your losses beyond your budget.
